A 15% discount offered to every shopper is not retention. It is margin leakage with a bright badge. Amazon Brand Tailored Promotions gives Brand Registry owners a more selective weapon: a promotion visible to customers Amazon has already identified as followers, recent buyers, repeat buyers, high-spend buyers, or cart abandoners. Used properly, it stops challenger brands donating the second and third order to category giants.
The catch is that Amazon supplies the audience, not the commercial judgment. Seller Central will show an estimated audience and may suggest a discount, but it cannot see your landed cost, FBA fee, return rate, or the profit you need after PPC. The operator’s job is to choose the right ASIN, the right customer segment, and a discount that earns the next order rather than buying revenue at a loss.
What Amazon Brand Tailored Promotions actually does
In Seller Central, eligible Brand Registry owners can find Brand Tailored Promotions under the Brands menu. The creation flow asks for an audience, a set of eligible products, a percentage-off discount, and start and end dates. The dashboard then reports promotion performance after it begins.
The practical advantage is audience selection. A cart abandoner may need a small nudge to complete a high-intent purchase. A repeat customer who bought a 30-day supplement supply may be ready for a replenishment offer. A brand follower may need a sharper reason to move from awareness to a first order. Those are three different buying states, and they should not receive the same offer.
Amazon can change the labels, availability, and audience definitions by marketplace and account. Before you build anything, open the audience selector and read the criteria displayed in your own Seller Central account. Do not assume that a 30-day cart window or a 12-month customer definition shown in an older account screenshot applies to your US account today.
The audience estimate is not a sales forecast
An estimated reachable audience of 20,000 is not 20,000 orders. Delivery, customer eligibility, competing Amazon messages, price, review rating, stock position, and the detail page all determine whether the promotion converts. Treat the estimate as a ceiling for planning, not a revenue line in a forecast.
This matters most when the campaign promotes one hero ASIN. If the ASIN has a 3.8-star rating, a thin main image, or only 9 units left in FBA, the discount will not repair the commercial problem. It can instead accelerate a stockout, erase organic rank, and leave Sponsored Products campaigns bidding into an unavailable offer. Check the Manage Inventory page, the Available quantity, and the next inbound shipment date before setting an end date.
Match the promotion to the buying moment
Cart abandoners are usually the cleanest first test because they have already crossed from search to consideration. Start with the exact ASIN they abandoned if it has reliable stock, a stable Buy Box, and contribution margin after the proposed discount. A 10% offer may be enough where the product has strong reviews and a price point above $30. A larger discount is not automatically better if it simply trains shoppers to wait.
Recent customers work better when the product has a natural reorder cycle or an adjacent product makes sense. A haircare brand might offer a conditioner to customers who bought shampoo. A skincare brand might put a serum in front of customers who purchased a cleanser. Do not use the promotion to force a random catalog item into the order. Amazon’s targeting can identify a relationship with the brand, but it cannot create product relevance.
Repeat and high-spend audiences deserve the most care. These customers may already buy without a discount. For them, a tailored offer should defend a category position, reward a planned bundle of products, or reduce the risk that a competitor’s Subscribe & Save offer takes the next replenishment order. If full-price repeat orders remain healthy in the Business Reports sales dashboard, test a lower percentage first rather than handing over 20% by default.
Brand followers sit higher up the funnel. They can be useful for a product launch or an event, but followers are not necessarily active buyers. Put a follower promotion behind a product detail page that can convert cold traffic: compliant claims, clear image sequence, accurate variation structure, and A+ Content that answers the objections visible in your customer questions and review themes.
Calculate the discount before you create it
Do not use ACoS to decide whether a promotion is profitable. ACoS measures ad spend against attributed ad sales. Brand Tailored Promotions affect order economics, so start with contribution profit per unit.
Use this calculation for the promoted ASIN:
Net selling price after discount – Amazon referral fee – FBA fulfillment fee – product landed cost – prep and inbound cost – expected return cost – promotion fee, if shown in the setup flow = contribution profit per unit.
Use the actual FBA fees and Referral fee displayed in Seller Central for that ASIN, not an old spreadsheet. A $39.99 beauty product with a 15% discount loses $6.00 before fees and cost are considered. If its pre-discount contribution profit is only $7.50, the offer leaves almost no room for a return, a disposal charge, or an advertising-assisted reorder.
Then set a hard cap. If you can afford 300 discounted units, ensure the dates and inventory cover that number without exposing 3,000 units of stock to an offer you have not proven. Amazon’s promotion setup may present its own controls and fees, so read every field on the final review screen before activation. Fees and terms can vary by marketplace and change over time.
Build a controlled 14-day test
A 14-day test is usually long enough to collect signal without normalizing a discount across a long replenishment cycle. Use one audience, one ASIN or tightly related set of ASINs, one discount level, and one clear commercial question. For example: can a 10% cart-abandoner offer recover orders on a $34.99 moisturizer while maintaining at least $5 contribution profit per redeemed unit?
Do not launch five audiences, three discount levels, and 20 ASINs at once. That creates activity, not learning. If the promotion performs, you will not know whether the audience, product, price point, or date range drove the result.
Before the start date, record the ASIN’s baseline for the prior 14 days. In Reports > Business Reports, use Detail Page Sales and Traffic by Child Item to capture Sessions, Unit Session Percentage, Ordered Product Sales, and Units Ordered. In the Brand Tailored Promotions dashboard, record the audience estimate, discount percentage, planned dates, and any forecast or fee displayed during setup.
If the product is advertised, also export the Sponsored Products Search Term Report for the same 14 days. You are looking for changes in paid conversion and branded search behavior, not just promotion redemptions. A promotion that appears successful but causes your conversion rate to drop from 18% to 11% may be pulling in lower-intent customers or exposing a listing problem.
Read the result like an operator
After the end date, compare redeemed orders and sales in the promotion dashboard with the ASIN’s baseline in Business Reports. Then inspect the Payments > Transaction View records so the discounts, fees, reimbursements, and refunds are visible in cash terms. Sales reported in a campaign view are not the same thing as money retained after Amazon charges.
Three outcomes matter. First, incremental units: did total Units Ordered rise above the normal run rate? Second, conversion quality: did Unit Session Percentage hold or improve? Third, contribution: did each redeemed order still leave enough profit after the discount and all Amazon costs?
If redemption is low, do not immediately increase the discount. Check whether the ASIN lost the Buy Box, went unavailable, had a suppressed detail page, or suffered a variation break. A child ASIN detached from its parent can lose reviews and selection context overnight. The promotion will keep running while the retail foundation is broken.
If redemption is high but profit is weak, reduce the discount or move to a higher-margin replenishment product. If redemption and profit are both strong, repeat the same test once more before expanding the audience. Two controlled 14-day windows tell you more than one loud result during a payday weekend.
This week, open Brands > Brand Tailored Promotions, select your best-stocked repeat-purchase ASIN, and write down its post-discount contribution profit before you create anything. If the number does not survive a 10% offer, do not fund a promotion. Fix the economics first, then take the next order from the giant that expected to own it.
